Diplomats in Laos say two European journalists and a U.S. interpreter arrested earlier this month for allegedly cooperating with anti-government rebels to will go on trial Friday. Belgian reporter Thierry Falise, French photographer Vincent Reynaud and U.S. pastor Naw Karl Mua will be tried in the town of Phonesavanh -- about 100 kilometers north of the capital of Vientiane. The three were arrested June 4. Four Lao nationals were also arrested, and their whereabouts are not known. Lao authorities have accused them of cooperating with "bandits" who killed a security officer.

The journalists were said to be reporting on ethnic Hmong rebels fighting the Communist government in Laos. Lao authorities have refused to release the journalists and their interpreter despite appeals from the European Union and human rights and free press groups. The European journalists are also accused of using tourist visas instead of the required journalist visas to enter a rebel stronghold off-limits to foreign reporters.

Een reportage met foto-essay over de achtergronden van de strijd van de Hmong rebellen is te lezen en bekijken in Time Asia Magazine.
